Joseph Oscar Nii Armah Mettle is a sensational worshipper, songwriter, and preacher who is popularly known in the gospel music industry as Joe Mettle. Joe Mettle is a Ghanaian who happens to be the eldest child of Florence Addo and Emmanuel Mettle six children and was born on July 5. At 12 Joe Mettle was doing petty trading to support his mother who was doing the same because his parents were poor. The petty trading that Joe was doing was the selling of ‘waakye’ leaves, brooms and canes at Agbogloshie for some time. When ‘waakye’ leaves faded out and were replaced by polythene bags to package our Ghanaian foods he switched to selling polythene bags.
Joe Oscar Nii Armah Mettle started his elementary school at Richard Akwei Memorial school and continued at Kade Primary School. After spending one year at Kade he continued his Junior High School in Accra at Korle Gonno Junior High School.
After completing Junior High school. He could not continue due to parents’ financial incapacitation. The pressure from neighbours asking him why he was not in school after writing BECE made him worry a lot. This made him pretend to go to school by putting up school uniform only to go to church premises. He used to play drums for churches where they give him a little financial reward. He left his parents house due to pessure from neighbours and would sleep in churches, stay with church memeber in the name of spending weekends only to stay there for weeks and at times he is ejected when they got fed-up. According to Mr. Mettle he slept in one pastor’s single room with him for about a year. At Accra Academy, he dropped out of school two times because of financial difficulties. This made it difficult for him to write SSSCE and so he did not complete Secondary school. According to Joe Mettle God made a way when he wrote and passed SSS private candidates’ examination and passed on two attempts.
This opened the chance for him not to learn draftsmanship as thought earlier, however, it took the intervention of God for him to get admission into Pentecost University College where he studied Bachelor in Marketing.
Joe Mettle is a professional marketer, he, however, had a calling to gospel music and worship with the intent to win souls for Jesus Christ. He started as a backing vocalist to gospel music legends like Cindy Thompson, the late Pastor Danny Nettey, and Reverend Tom Bright Davies.
He then formed and joined a gospel music group called Soul Winners. He was a lead singer in the group and this group cannot be forgotten in the Ghanaian Music industry. Soul Winner’s songs could make you dance without feeling tired. They were superb.
Joe Mettle broke away from this group and started to sing on his own and so in 2017 his music enjoyed much airplay, acceptability and was always on top of music charts especially in Ghana. He has featured on local programmes; Adom Praiz and more and international gospel programmes; like South African Broadcasting Corporation’s TV show titled, “Gospel Classics”, etc.
Mr. Mettle is popularly known with his hit songs like “Nhyira”, “Medo Wo”, “Akokyem Nyame”, “Mensuro”, “Turning Around” and “Yesu Adi Nkunim”. His latest hit that earned him nominations at 2017’s VGMA is titled “Onwanwani” (God of Wonders). In the meantime, Joe has five albums and still counting. They are “My Gratitude” (2011), “Sound of Praise” (2013), “The Encounter” (2015), “God of Miracles” (2017) and “Wind Of Revival” (2019).
